UK Biobank has an ethical responsibility to ensure that participants’ data are accessed only by eligible scientific researchers conducting health-related research in the public interest.
To be eligible for access to UK Biobank data, you must:
- demonstrate a track record of legitimate research
- be affiliated with a recognised research organisation
- operate from a country that complies with international regulations and is not subject to UK, US or EU sanctions

Researcher responsibilities
We require approved researchers to:
- provide annual project reports about their research. See annual report guidance on the Community.
- notify us of any publications reporting on research connected to UK Biobank data. See publication submission guidance on the Community.
- return results to UK Biobank so that they are available for other researchers to use
- keep relevant information such as contact details up to date
